Is Your Carrier's Safety Performance Affecting Your Business?

Operating a successful trucking company requires more than moving freight on time. Your carrier's safety performance can directly influence operating costs, business opportunities, and exposure to regulatory intervention.

FMCSA's Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) program evaluates motor carriers through its Safety Measurement System (SMS), using roadside inspection violations, reportable crashes, and investigation findings.

The consequences of poor safety performance can extend far beyond individual violations.

Recurring violations can affect the whole business.

01

Higher Insurance Costs

An unfavorable safety history may influence insurance underwriting decisions, premiums, and renewal opportunities.

02

Reduced Business Opportunities

Freight brokers, shippers, and potential business partners may review a carrier's safety information when deciding whether to establish or continue a business relationship.

03

Increased Regulatory Attention

Unfavorable SMS results can increase the likelihood of FMCSA interventions, including warning letters and investigations.

04

Recurring Violations and Operational Expenses

Repeated roadside inspection violations, out-of-service orders, equipment repairs, delays, and administrative work can increase operating costs and disrupt daily operations.

05

Driver Performance Concerns

Repeated violations may indicate gaps in driver knowledge, inspection practices, training, supervision, or the carrier's internal safety procedures.

Why Do Safety Scores Remain High?

Improving safety performance requires more than waiting for old violations to disappear.

FMCSA generally evaluates roadside inspection and crash performance over a rolling 24-month period, giving greater weight to more recent events.

If drivers continue receiving violations, new inspection results may offset or undermine improvements from older events aging out.

The goal should not be simply to improve a number. The goal is to prevent the violations that contribute to poor safety performance.

Our Approach

We Don't Guess. We Analyze.

At Driving Compass, we understand that similar safety violations don't always have the same underlying causes.

Two carriers may experience identical violations while facing entirely different operational challenges. Applying the same corrective measures to both companies may fail to address the actual problems.

That's why we don't believe in generic recommendations or one-size-fits-all solutions.

Driving Compass conducts a comprehensive, individualized assessment of your carrier's safety performance and operating environment.

Our specialists evaluate information gathered from multiple sources, including relevant safety records and direct communication with carrier personnel, to develop a clearer understanding of your company's specific challenges.

We look beyond the numbers to understand what is happening behind them.

Based on our findings, we develop tailored recommendations designed to address identified weaknesses, reduce preventable violations, and strengthen overall safety performance.
